Deer Park students and teachers celebrated the literature and cultural writers of both Hispanic and South Asian traditions during the month of October. ELA classes at Robert Frost Middle School and Deer Park High School celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a day devoted to the inspiring writers of Spanish backgrounds. South Asian works of literature were also given a day to be highlighted in anticipation of the Diwali holiday.
Students participated in different activities celebrating these writers, including browsing and reading young adult lit, writing poems modeled on historical authors, sharing cultural foods and even letting guest readers perform poetry and analyzing translation in these languages. Students visited the libraries in both schools for activities that included student-led discussions, poetry readings and discussions about the inclusion of new authors.
