Course Descriptions

At each grade level, students will take the New York State Intermediate Level Mathematics Assessment.

Grade 6 Math:
The 6th grade math program covers a variety of topics that students have not seen before. Their arithmetic skills need to be sharp since arithmetic is no longer taught at this level. There is a chapter on decimals integrated with other topics and on fractions which assumes a basic understanding of fractions using all four operations. For the first time, students delve into the world of positive and negative numbers and a great unit on statistics with real world applications. The course has lots of algebra with solving equations and graphing lines on the coordinate plane. Geometry and probability are also part of the curriculum. Problem solving is an integral part of each unit. The students are also introduced to the scientific calculator and we recommend that they come to school with the TI-30X IIS.

Grade 7: Students are in a pre-algebra course and the only arithmetic review is operations and fractions. Students will work with variable and algebraic expressions, solve more complex equations, develop the laws of exponents, work with ratio, proportions and percents, graphing inequalities on the number line, and graphing systems of equations on the coordinate system. Geometry is done throughout the year with a variety of units covering lines, angles, triangles, area, perimeter, volume, metric units, surface area, similar triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem. There is also a probability and statistics unit with data analysis showing the real world applications. Problem solving is an important part of each unit. Students should have a TI-30X IIS calculator.

Grade 8: The 8th grade program covers several topics. It includes the real number system, working with monomials and polynomials, radicals, solving first and second degree equations, graphing equalities, solving systems of equations algebraically, geometry of the triangle and polygon, trigonometry, properties and angles of quadrilaterals, solving first degree inequalities, factoring, solving quadratic equations, ratio, proportion, percent, statistics, logic and probability. Word problems are integrated throughout the year.

Grade 8 Accelerated Program:
The 8th grade accelerated course is a combination of the material learned in 8th grade as well as the Integrated Algebra curriculum.  These students will be taking the Integrated Algebra Regents in June.  Topics covered are volume, geometry, grahing, transformations, direct variation and ratios.

AIS- Math (Academic Intervention Services, Math) and Math Lab - This is State mandated extra instructional time for students who may be at risk for passing higher academic requirements on State Assessments and Regents for graduation from high school. Placement based on State test scores, diagnostic tests, actual achievement in content classes, and teacher recommendation.
