In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Deer Park held a Hispanic Heritage Celebration Day on Sept. 29 at both Deer Park High School and Robert Frost Middle School, with teachers conducting lessons focused on Hispanic authors, culture, experiences and literature. Students in all English language arts classes at both schools celebrated with readings from contemporary and historical Hispanic writers, learning about musical, artistic and culinary traditions, and creating their own writing in response. Students shared personal experiences and wrote creative works that explored the rich Hispanic literary traditions.

At Frost, the Cultural Awareness Club – under the direction of teacher Sara Watkin-Fox – created a main lobby display case with an original painting of a flamenco dancer, painted by art teacher Danielle Menig, along with flags and decorations representing Spanish-speaking countries. The club members also enjoyed a “Loteria” tournament where they played a Spanish-style bingo game for prizes, and are working to create a hallway display to showcase their research on foods, traditional clothing, holidays and traditions of Hispanic cultures.

“The most gratifying part of these activities was watching students light up with pride in describing their own cultural experiences with their peers,” Director of ELA, Reading and Library Justin Uliano said.
