Student members of Deer Park High School’s GSA attended the Long Island LGBT Youth Leadership Conference on March 18, hosted by the LGBT Network at Suffolk Community College. Alongside more than 400 adult leaders and other students from across Long Island, the Deer Park students participated in workshops and seminars on cyberbullying, hate crimes and social justice issues. One Deer Park student, sophomore Brooke Washington, was asked to address the conference at the podium, and eloquently shared her observations on equality and leadership.
“It was so wonderful to see the kids making new connections in this unique environment,” GSA Advisor Beth McCourt said. “Even students who are normally very quiet found their voices and embraced the idea that they, too, can stand up and lead their peers to a more inclusive environment. Giving them this experience was a gift.”
