Deer Park High School students recently visited second-grade classes at John Quincy Adams and May Moore primary schools to read children’s books, teach social-emotional lessons, and practice their public speaking. Christine Harbison's public speaking students spread the ELA department’s “Book Love” initiative, sharing enthusiasm for books and encouraging students to develop lifelong reading habits. The public speakers practiced the skills they are learning in the course while also hosting discussions with students about social-emotional topics raised in the books. This year, each speaker also planned activities and a mini lesson for their guest class.

“Our students thoroughly enjoyed having these high school role models come into their classrooms,” JQA Associate Principal Mike Quartararo said.

“The JQA teachers were very impressed with our ‘teachers,’ who learned about lesson planning and executed a lesson for their classes with an activity," Harbison said.
