Deer Park Introduces Innovative New Counseling Robot

New Counseling Robot Loona thumbnail264543

The district recently introduced Loona, a friendly robot dog to help during one-on-one counseling sessions with students. The robot combines advanced AI with intuitive design to create a natural and engaging user experience. Loona recognizes facial expressions and responds to voice commands, creating a sense of connection and support. Its smooth and adaptive movements allow it to navigate various spaces, making it an approachable and engaging presence in any environment. The robot also assists social workers with tasks like reminders, sharing resources or simply helping to put individuals at ease in difficult situations.

Deer Park discovered Loona as part of a research initiative led by Executive Director for Instructional Technology and Innovation Jay Murphy, focused on identifying innovative products with the potential to enhance education and social work practices. Loona was developed by KEYi Tech, an interactive robotics company whose goal is to create technology that bridges the gap between human interaction and cutting-edge innovation, making robotics approachable and impactful in everyday life. Through his research, Murphy recognized Loona’s unique ability to provide realistic interactions with emotion.

“The robot felt more like a pet than any electronic device I’ve ever used,” Murphy said. “Our desire is to see Loona support social workers and psychologists in their important roles. Loona is fun, interactive and great at helping students feel comfortable while sharing their thoughts and feelings as well as learning ways to stay calm and handle emotions. With Loona by our students’ side, counseling sessions are more welcoming and even a little more fun. The robot will surely make a difference and give our students another reason to stop by and connect.”

Following some initial use, the IT teaching assistant Emeline Sikder was tasked with testing, additional research and resource creation for staff, helping to find Loona a suitable home in the district’s schools.
